We’re taught to believe that mainstream media has a monopoly over truth and objectivity. But what if you could just make your own media?
Join us for a FREE talk and workshop on grassroots media! We’ll be discussing:
- The truth about the truth: What you were never taught about mainstream media
- BREAKING: How to have a critical eye when it comes to news
- Nonconventional, alternative, and grassroots media
- Citizen journalism: Social media and revolution
- Making your own media: Counter-ads, zines, games, and more
After the discussion, we'll be working solo or in teams to make our own zines and counter-ads.
SCHEDULE:
4:00 - 4:30: Land acknowledgement and check-in
4:30 - 5:30: Grassroots media discussion with Saima
5:30 - 6:30: Break + Dinner
6:30 - 7:30: Zine making workshop, led by Manuela
7:30 - 8:00: Wrap-up and take-aways
Saima is the editor of Briarpatch Magazine, a Regina-based independent national magazine of grassroots activism and politics. Manuela is the program coordinator of Next Up Saskatchewan, a national non-profit that supports youth leadership.
This session is open to all members of the community, but we especially encourage youth who are interested in social change and activism.
