The Next Up Climate Leadership Program is new pilot program which began in March of 2016. This 5 weekend intensive course was offered to Alberta residents committed to bringing climate action to their organizations. The workshop part of the program wound up this June. Participants are presently working on the action projects developed over the course of the intensive and will be meeting in the fall of 2016 to review and collaborate on strengthening their projects.
The CLP has 27 participants from across the province representing people working in the public service, municipalities, First Nations, education, healthcare, energy and power industries, faith groups and labour. Workshops were held in Edmonton, Calgary, Kananaskis Country and Red Deer. Participants meet policy makers, leaders from their sectors of work and expert facilitators to learn climate policy, social leadership and a range of practical skills needed to inspire and support climate action within their workplaces and organizations. A principal part of the program is the development of climate action plan specific to each participant that using a peer support model and ongoing resources provided by the CLP. In the September of 2016 CLP participants met in Calgary to report back on the progress of their action plans and to make plans for further CLP checkins and CLP network activities. CLP grads are part of the national Next Up network of progressive leaders in social and environmental justice that will continue to support their capacity through opportunities with Next Up's Edmonton and Calgary programs.
